There's A Lotta Programs Out There!

If you got here because of a banner ad, I hope it wasn't the first one that I posted. Well, that'd be okay too, I'm just embarrassed by the lack of quality of that one. The one on the home page for the site I'm always plugging is one I made that turned out a lot better. The first one I placed on a web site (cost me money too, but not too much if you'll look in the links) was a tad screwed up :(

The problem was that I made the banner with the painting program that came with my computer, Adobe Photo Deluxe, when before I'd always used Paint Shop Pro. And I didn't know that there was ONE big difference between the two programs. In Paint Shop Pro, when you delete a section of a picture, it automatically fills up with a color that you've chosen, the default being white. So using Adobe, I would cut parts of the picture out and it looked white on the screen but actually was empty and transparent. That wasn't a problem looking at things in the program or just putting graphics on this site because it has a white background so it'd fill in the color anyway. But that first banner went on a site that had a black background and the first cell isn't readable. So the banner kind of vanishes with a hint of text in the empty darkness before the next cell loads and then it works fine.

Just a lesson that you need to test your stuff out. I should have put that animated gif on my site and seen how it looked with different backgrounds and would have noticed how bad it was. At least if you learn something from a mistake, it doesn't cost quite so much, eh? I like to think so anyway.

There's always a silver lining though... I'm so glad I got this program called Pop Up Stopper. Get it HERE I always hated those damned pop up and pop under windows and this FREE program stops them dead. So there's the link, get your own and feel the FREEDOM of surfing porno sites without those damn windows... not that I ever look at those kinds of sites myself, of course. (cough)

But if you've ever gotten "trapped" in a sea of pop up windows to the point of having to shut off the computer to get them out of memory before they'd stop popping up, then you'll appreciate that great program. I'll sacrifice my Battlefield: Galactica DVD in their honor. After all, that's what a microwave is for, right?

There's A Lotta Idiots Out There Too!

Today I wanna talk about a website I almost visited. Here it is: www.goodbye.net . Check it out if you like. I didn't make it past the java bullshit movies promoting something... I don't know and I don't care. It took forever to load the java, for some weird philosophical message and then it switched to pictures fading in and out with sad music and a picture of a very old man who looked sad... lord knows WHAT THE HELL they were trying to get people to join but that's the WRONG way to do it.

Not everyone has T1 lines that make things go really fast. When YOU make a website, or purchase one, I hope you'll have the sense to keep it simple and fast loading. No fancy animations and scrolling banners and flashing icons... I've seen some really horrendous sites (see links and go visit Web Pages That Suck for prime examples) that made me RUN away from them and anyone trying to sell something has GOT to keep things clean and neat so people will stick around long enough to listen to a pitch or two.

Marketing is really simple if you think about it. You get someone's attention, explain what you've got and why they should buy it. Sites that take forever to load with tons of graphics are BORING... so whoever they are, I wouldn't want to sign up with anybody who lacks judgement so badly to have such a screwed up web site.

Which brings me to another pet peeve. Who are the morons who post the EXACT same message over and over and over again in the newsgroups? Under different headlines, and different names, so you keep bumping into the same line for line message that didn't get you interested the first time and just irritates you because you've seen it so many damn times. Total lack of imagination. And why would anyone join up with someone as lame as that? Or the geniuses who post like THIS:

Subject Line: "MAKE \$500 a WEEK!"
Message Body: "www.givememoney.com"

No sales letter, no explanation, no reason to click except boredom. I like checking out other people's ads just to see what I can learn from the stupidity of others. Not to mention the typos which really make me wanna read their post.

There's A Lotta Bastards Out There!

Did you hear about what some websites are doing today to get customers? I read that a virus scanning service offered free scanning at their site. So when a customer goes there and clicks on the FREE SCAN, they get a message saying that their computer is corrupted and show a directory of the visitor's computer on the screen to prove that their security sucks. The problem being that they didn't scan anything and only sent a command to the victim's browser that made their computer display their files in order to scare them into paying for their virus cleanup service. (see Langa List newsletter link at top for more info like this)

Those idiots have revamped their site and tried to pass it off as a joke but I'm glad that I never went there. It reminds me of the same morons who send out all those email hoaxes about viruses, Bill Gates, and a little girl who's eight years old and wants her letter forwarded throughout the world to keep her memory alive when she finally succumbs to cancer. All bogus (see the Urban Hoax pages at Snopes for more details).

Which reminds me of a silly spam I got the other day. First of all, it was a promotion of a system to make money by servicing the accounts of people who have judgements due to them. The problem with that is that there aren't enough unpaid judgements around for you to service that aren't already being handled by lawyers. So the spam was already on a wrong foot. But the funny thing was that it was written in html that was badly coded so it was all garbled with all the coding showing so I couldn't have deciphered the message even if I was interested. So that idiot sent a garbled message to hundreds of people because he was too stupid to check his work. lol

FIRST RULE OF ANYTHING: Double check what you're doing. Whether its a product, or a website, or a book, or even the special sauce you're making for a spaghetti dinner, you gotta make the effort to make sure its right or you won't satisfy anybody. And in business, that's fatal. Remember the KISS principle: Keep It Simple Stupid. Don't get too fancy and over develop things to the point that you can't keep it under control or it becomes a pain in the ass to keep it under control. Of course, having said that I'm sure I'll find that half my links aren't working and all that good stuff. Or maybe just a small meteor will hit the house.

Last thing, I'm not a guru and don't claim to know everything. Just trying to make a little bread on the side and work my way up to bigger things someday. Experienced web marketers probably won't get much value from this site but I hope I'll get a lot of newbies who need some stuff to get them started. And hope I can conjure up a few tips they may not know about here and there.

     Laterz.
