A Few Observations About Marketing On The Internet They say that ten percent of the internet population is interested in money making opportunities. For a much smaller percentage, its been a booming business and has raked in millions of dollars. For all too many, like Amazon.com for example, its been a losing proposition. I like Amazon.com a lot and I'm sorry to have heard that they've been running at a loss since their beginnings. I hope some of us can do better.
I'm not a guru or anything, just another internet wanderer but I think I've learned a few things about marketing and advertising and I'd like to share what I know and work up to things I don't know but which can be learned. And I have an editorial section if you're interested in some less formal ramblings about things that have annoyed me on the internet.
For starters, we need to examine what makes up a campaign on the internet. I like to think of it in military terms, like a good computer war game like Warcraft. There are thousands of people out there trying to sell everyone everything. How many of them are doing it the right way though?
It boils down to this:
1. You need to get people's attention.
2. You need to gain their confidence.
3. You gouge them til they're bleeding.Well, that's the way MOST businesses seem to work on the net. For instance, there are dozens of marketing books you can buy for a fairly low amount. Unfortunately, after you buy the book they tell you that their system for marketing involves purchasing other services from them that amount to twenty times the price of the damn book. Its one thing to have other products to sell, that's good business, but claiming that the first product is "all you need" is bogus and unfair.
And before you get anyone's attention, you need something to sell. Something cost effective with a big enough profit margin to make it worthwhile. That's what we'll talk about on the next page. Which products are popular and what kind of markets they have.
