The Proper Way Of Advertising Your Products:

Let's start with the Free For All sites. They are a sucker trap for new users. Do NOT, I repeat NOT post your link on any of those sites. First of all, nobody really reads any of those sites. They are simply lists of links, hundreds of them, and even if people were going to those sites to look at them, they have a limit to how many links are shown at a time. So when new ones are submitted, the old ones are deleted. And when you submit to one of them, you're automatically submitted to hundreds of other sites. Which wouldn't be so bad except: in order to submit to the FFA site, you give them permission to email you.

I'm speaking from experience. I used one of those free submission sites that will send your link to the whole FFA network and received HUNDREDS of emails from every damn website owner. And the way the FFA sites are set up, if you pay for the site you'll have access to a program that saves all the email addresses of anyone submitting to your site and then they can send you mail forever and ever or sell the names as lists to other people. Its a cycle that probably never ends. So DO NOT post to any FFA site if you value your time. It takes a lot of effort to delete hundreds of posts and I was forced to shut down one email account because of it.

The same caution applies to any sites which promote email sharing among its members. Some sites will let you set up a link site and you're allowed to email every other member once a day. Since they all email you too, everyone will be receiving too many emails to read if they wanted to. I'll admit though that I did read a lot of the mail I got from the FFA, but mainly to learn from the mistakes of others.

The first thing you have to do before you submit an ad, for example, is to check your spelling! No one is going to finish reading a letter that starts with errors in the headline. And the second thing is, don't make outrageous claims. At least half the mail I received claimed I could make "Thousands A WEEK With No Effort!" or some other similar nonsense. And even some pyramid scams. And the same sort of dumb things are in the newsgroups too. Sometimes the headlines don't even have anything to do with the text of the message. Sometimes there isn't any text, just a link. Like anybody is going to hit a random link based on a one line headline. They're just wasting their time and yours when you read them. Which brings me to the newsgroups.

Frankly, I don't recommend posting in them unless what you're selling is on topic with the newsgroup. For instance, if you're selling videos, its probably okay to post a brief message in a general video newsgroup directing people to your video selling website. Brief and to the point and only one message every couple of days and you should be fine. If you're selling horror videos in a western movies newsgroup though, then you're asking for trouble. If you're careful you should be okay. No guarantees though.

And there's a newsgroup called alt.ads which sounds like it should be open for anything. You may find people giving you other advice and telling you to post in alt.business and places like that, and you probably can IF its within the guidelines of their FAQ. So go to deja-news.com and read the FAQ's first. I know a newsgroup like biz.marketplace allows you to post ads for your product but not to recruit for the MLM that your product is coming from. Its a thin line and how many people really read those newsgroups anyway except for non advertising ones?

And regardless of where you're posting, don't expect to sell anything directly from your ad. The job of an ad is to interest someone into either asking for more information or going to your web site to check out your offer. Very few people are dumb enough to send money based on a single newsgroup posting or ad. You need to show them a lot more before they'll bite.

There are some more things not to do but I think you get the general idea. But so far I've only warned you about things not to do, without getting into specifics of what to do. So briefly, these are the things I think you should do:

Look for FREE ads on reputable sites like Yahoo. READ the terms of service. ALWAYS read the terms of service. There's nothing that kills your business faster than getting kicked offline by your server. If you don't have a website, then there are plenty of free web sites available but again, read the terms of service so you'll know what they do and don't allow. Some don't allow you to sell or link to certain kinds of sites (porno, hacker, ect). It'd be a shame to spend time and effort on your site only to find it gone after violating their rules.

You'll need to spend some money on ads sometime. The sooner you can afford to do so the better. Small ads in email newsletters are a good place to start. The popular sites sell advertising but it'll cost you an arm and a leg. You'll have to spend a LOT of time looking for the best deal.

Now on to search engines. They are supposedly very effective in getting people to visit your site. Unfortunately, the tricks and mastery of them is beyond my scope. However, I have downloaded a program that is available on below that will submit your site to three of the top search engines for free. You can get it at the bottom of this page. It will only work for thirty days but its a start and if you can afford it, you can buy the full version which optimizes your web pages for the search engines.

There are other people who DO know a lot about search engines and how to get them to feature your site prominently and you'll have the opportunity to deal with them later. After all, I AM here to get you to buy something from them. But not until the end and if you've made it this far, I hope you'll give the pitch a fair hearing. But now let's go on to selling on the next page.
